Update: Working towards the development and mass production of nasopharyngeal swabs

HP has developed an investigational 3D printed nasopharyngeal test swab, designed for use in COVID-19 testing. HP has shared the swab designs with several premiere research partners for clinical evaluation. We are working closely with leading researchers at Harvard University and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to assist with gathering test data and to further refine the 3D printed swab designs, materials, and printing capacity. We are advancing fast with the goal of mass producing the swabs with HP’s industrial-grade Jet Fusion 3D printers. Once testing and any other FDA requirements are complete, we plan to use the services of our global network of digital manufacturing customers and partners, to help meet this urgent need.

We are coordinating with government, health, and industry agencies and experts in numerous countries to identify the parts most in need, validate designs, and begin production.

Applications currently in development include nasopharyngeal swabs, FFP3 masks and ventilator components.

Wrist Cover

Currently, some hospital staff need to use two gloves in order to fully cover the part of their arms that could get exposed between the end of a lab coat sleeve and the end of a glove: One interior glove to close the end of the sleeve of the lab coat, and then a disposable glove on top of the interior glove. This sterilizable wrist cover device was designed based on feedback from hospital staff, who were looking for a way to cover the exposed skin on their arm, whilst minimizing the number of gloves that are used unnecessarily, as these are currently in short supply.

Door handles are among the most germ-infested objects in houses, hospitals, factories, and elderly homes. Materialise is sharing a free design file for all worldwide for a hands-free 3D-printed door opener.

Personal Door Opener

This tool has been designed to allow users to open a variety of doors without touching potentially contaminated door handles.

The tool can be attached by lanyard to belts or other parts of clothing or bags for easy portability.

Mask Adjuster

Helps relieve ear pain for hospital staff who need to wear masks for long periods of time.

The adjuster was joint designed/optimized by Peak Sport Products Co. and HP based on inputs from doctors and nurses in the field.

CIIRC RP95-3D (Half-Mask)

Personal protective equipment - a half-mask - with a P3 replaceable external filter. The set consists of a 3D printed body of the mask and an external filter.

Developed by the Czech Institute of Informatics, Robotics and Cybernetics CTU (CIIRC CTU).

Field respirator

First industrialized field 3D printed emergency respiration device to support hospitals and ICUs. A mechanical bag valve mask (BVM) that can be used for short term emergency ventilation of COVID-19 patients. 3D printing allows this health system to be made available quickly during the shortage of medical equipment. With HP Multi Jet Fusion technology and existing capabilities in the alliance, both in design and in prototyping, the functionality of this first model of the largely 3D printed emergency respiration device has been developed and tested. Industrially scalable – expectation is that the production capacity of between 50 and 100 units per day can be reached.

Design created by Leitat senior engineer Mr. Magí Galindo, and medically validated by Dr. Lluís Blanch, Director of Innovation at the Hospital Parc Taulí in Sabadell, an expert in mechanical ventilation.
